I/O PSYCHOLOGY PRACTIONER
Cost Analysis and Enhancement of Police Officer Recruitment
In my role as an Exam Analyst Intern with the City of Los Angeles, I embarked on a practicum project aimed at enhancing the efficiency of police officer recruitment. This project involved a detailed analysis of the costs associated with each stage of the recruitment process, identifying inefficiencies, and developing recommendations to optimize spending and improve recruitment practices.

I. Data Collection
Conducted comprehensive data gathering on all aspects of the hiring process for police officers, focusing on the costs associated with each recruitment stage from initial application to final hiring.
II. Document-Based Inquiry
Instead of conducting stakeholder interviews, I developed specific questionnaires related to key recruitment stages—such as the Polygraph Test, Interview, and Psychological Evaluation—tailored for each Division involved in the recruitment process.
III. Sensitive Data Handling
Created individual documents for each Division, detailing the necessary information such as hours worked and positions contributing to specific recruitment steps. These documents were securely sent to the respective Division Chiefs due to the sensitive nature of the information.
IV. Cost Analysis
Analyzed the financial data provided by the Division Chiefs to pinpoint where resources were being utilized and identify potential areas for cost reduction.
V. Recommendation Development
Formulated strategic recommendations aimed at reducing costs while maintaining or enhancing the quality of recruits.
VI. Sensitive Data Handling
Assessed the potential impacts of the proposed recommendations on overall recruitment efficiency, ensuring that suggested changes would provide tangible benefits.
Process Breakdown
Reflection
This practicum project at the City of Los Angeles provided me with profound insights into the industrial applications of I/O Psychology, specifically within the realm of HR analytics and optimization. Managing the competing demands of my internship duties alongside this intensive project emphasized the importance of effective project management in a high-stakes municipal environment. Adapting my data collection methods from planned interviews to a secure, document-centric approach was a significant shift that enhanced my adaptability and problem-solving skills under tight constraints.
The project's focus on analyzing recruitment costs and identifying inefficiencies allowed me to apply I/O psychological principles practically. This involved strategic data management, where I designed and managed detailed documentation tailored to division-specific needs while ensuring confidentiality and data integrity. The insights gained from analyzing these complex datasets are invaluable, providing a clear picture of resource allocation and potential areas for cost optimization in police officer recruitment.
Reflecting on this experience, I see its immediate benefit in sharpening my analytical thinking and enhancing my ability to handle sensitive information securely. These skills are crucial for any I/O psychologist looking to make impactful decisions based on robust data analysis. Looking forward, the expertise I have developed will be instrumental in my future roles, enabling me to contribute effectively to the optimization of HR processes. This project not only bolstered my professional competence but also aligned perfectly with my career goals of integrating psychological principles with practical business solutions to improve organizational efficiency.
